Hey there all. I just wanted to introduce myself real quick. I am retired military and birds are a definite passion of mine. I am a little different then most because I try my absolute best to avoid medications, wormers and anything that isn't natural. I will medicate but only on an individual basis and only as need be. I raise black jersey giants, BLUE jersey giants, welsummers, cochins, serama's, several bantam's, bourbon red turkeys, blue slate turkey's, bronze turkey's (I am getting rid of them), a few black spanish, a few breeds of geese (the pomeranian's are my favorites), muscovy ducks, black swedish ducks and about umpteen different color variety's of peacocks. OHHHH and a few spoiled rotten goats! Needless to say my place is a mad house but just to top it off I FREE RANGE everything during the day (minus the serama's) and lock them up at night. This morning I woke up to six peacocks sitting on the front porch rail yelling at the dog to leave. Good to be here!

Jojo, I have a pretty limited flock right now that I am trying to build up. The saving grace is that most are Class "A" and Class "B" birds right now with no "C's". Not that it means much when it comes to breeding them. I should have some chicks in a month or so hopefully. The only problem is that I am realizing that hatching serama eggs are about the hardest bird I have ever had to deal with. I am just south of Jackson, Tn.

Welcome to the club. Sounds like you need all day long to take care of the critters at your place. I just have chickens, a flock of general egg layers and a breeding flock of cuckoo marans.

I have had chickens off and on for a long time, but I am pretty new at incubating eggs. I have a hard time with any egg so I guess I better stay away from serama eggs for awhile. LOL

Thanks rinksgi and herb. I definitely do put a lot of time into the critters on the place, probably more then I should at times but I dont sleep a lot so that gives me a little more time then most. Jojo, I am glad that you are into incubating. I wish that more people were honestly and dont let the eggs scare you. Right when I think that I have it all figured out is when I end up with a horrible hatch rate. I took such good care of my serama eggs that it was unreal, didn't wash them, handled them as little as possible and usually with toilet paper to avoid hand oils, moved them tenderly the whole nine yards. Out of a dozen I ended up with three chicks. I think that some people have a natural tendency to hatch them better then others and I know that sounds crazy but I honestly believe it with these eggs. I usually run at least a 90 percent hatch rate on my birds but that isn't the case with the serama's. I have a friend in Ms that has no problems at all and for the life of me we cant figure out what I am doing wrong. If anyone reads this and can give advice I would surely appreciate it.

Everytime I downsize one type of animal I wind up with a different type. Downsized the goat herd and wound up with a great pyr. Downsized the horse herd by one and wound up with four new snakes. One day I'm gonna get it worked out where when I downsize I don't get another animal!!

I just sold all of my buff orpingtons (I didn't list them cause they were gone). Yesterday I picked up a pair of creole's, a pair of red splash, a trio of silver duckwings and a few more barred rock bantam's..........................sigh. I'm not good at this................

Lol verlon, I understand not being good at it. I'm going to look at three more horses tomorrow morning. Most likely will bring 1 or all home and my herd total will move from 10 to 11-13. Oh well, what's a few more!

I'm trying to avoid looking at it Timbo. See I don't need more, but between my parents, fiancé, and just random folks I meet, I've acquired 10. And only 2 of those 10 were in good health when purchased. I'm a sucker for a sappy face in need. The ones I'm looking at tomorrow the man can no longer care for, I don't need them, but I also can't let them get poor. And I wouldn't be looking at these if it weren't for my fiancé and father. But if you still have the ad up in a few weeks my curiosity will get the best of me and I'll have to go check it out. If not sooner lol.

Hello everyone My wife and I are retired Military and moved here (south of Lexington) almost 2 years ago. We are raising Rhode Island Reds, Pekin ducks, and hope to have Pheasant and quail soon. We are new to this but are trying to make a go of it. Will probably be on here with many questions.
