I have these watering cups that are attached to a bucket and the bucket hangs. It's suppose to keep their water clean and have water available constantly. Anyway. I put 5 of these cups into the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. They are suppose to not overflow but they do. I haven't filled up the bucket but a couple of inches above where the cups are screwed into the bucket and they overflow. Not just one but all 5. This pic shows the inside of the cup. The little metal tube is suppose to stop the water flow when it is covered up. The water comes out of the tube.
If anybody knows how this is suppose to work please let me know. Do I need to add more cups or less or have them higher?

Are you putting lid on it it might need a lid to pull a vacuum.

That makes sense. No I didn't put a lid on it. I don't think we have any. I'll just have to go buy a bucket with lid. I have another set of the cups to make another water bucket and some of those water nipples I also plan to use. I need something that holds more water in a couple of my pens. And that the mice can't get in and drown. It's too often i've went to feed and found drownd mice in the water buckets. I don't want my birds drinking water with a dead mouse in it. YUCK!!!

So those do work? I have been trying to decide whether to get them or not. Would the water stay fresh with 55 gals? I would love not having to deal with those darn heavy waterers...input please

I do believe that it would work . I not sure how long the water would stay fresh.

I wouldn't put more than what would last at least 2 days if something happened and I couldn't get to them to feed and water. I always keep the feed containers to where if I couldn't get out to tend to everybody they wouldn't have to do without. Thats why I need something bigger for water in a couple of my pens. I also need something they won't knock over or scratch dirt into. In the summer I spend alot of time cleaning out water containers because the heat makes them get green and I don't want my chickens drinking stagnant water.

It's time to start adding some bleach to your water.

I haven't tried a lid yet. I have to go and buy one because I can't find one around here. I've heard of adding bleach to the water but i've always been afraid to. I just clean out the water containers. The rabbit bottles I have so many that when they start turning green I just give them a clean one and bring the dirty ones in and soak them in bleach. In the hot summer I fill them half way with water and put them in the freezer. About noon when the temp is hitting the high numbers I fill the frozen ones up with water and switch them out with the others then do the same with those. In the freezer they go. I keep frozen water botthes and gatorade bottles in the freezer and everybody gets ice bottles in their water containers. At night I take them out and back in the freezer they go. It's alot of work but it keeps them from overheating.

I got lids today and to test I filled one bucket about 1/3 with water and put the lid on it. It held water till I started trying to show the chickens how to use it then the cups started to over flow. I think the bucket needs more water to have more of a "suction" so they won't overfill. I figured that once the little nipples that are in the cups are at water level they are suppose to stop water flow. But if you push the nipple it makes the water come out so I wonder if that is when the cup is suppose to fill up is when the chickens drink and bump the nipple.
Makes me feel a little like I should know how they are suppose to work because they are such a simple object. lol I should have paid more attention in school instead of all those naps I took. lol
