I don't think I have asked this before but I have a hen who looks and has for months scraggily and her rear area is featherless and bright bright red. Any ideas? I thought maybe mites but now I don't think so but just for good measure will put some seven dust on her this week end. Any thougt? Would appreciate input.

Hey cks4me, Without seeing it...it sounds like something called a "prolapse" of the vent area as far as I can research. I have read that you can either do some steroid injections from your vet or some poultry keepers suggest either "Anusol" or "Preparation H" creams. Wash the area with warm, slightly salty water to clean and sanitize the vent area. You might use a soft hand soap type of cleaner as well instead of salt before applying the creams. Also, to stop any possible pecking from other birds, you probably should quarantine her from the others to let her rest and heal. You can also push the protruding area back in when applying the cream, etc. Be sure to wear some surgical gloves when doing all these deeds. Keep things as sanitary as possible and keep fresh, clean water at all times as well. Hopefully, Herb or Timbo has better suggestions than I can come up with. I am still learning things and they, plus Gina are the pros! There is also something also called "vent gleet" which is an avian yeast infection in younger birds. That would probably have a white, smelly discharge from the area if that is the case and not be red. Hope this helps some...good luck. Mike...aka...Garden Daddy www.gardendaddy.blogspot.com

Thank you for the info. It is not prolapse I have had a girl with that recently. This is sort of like a very angry red diaper rash. No pusstuals just red red red. Looks very angry. Any other thoughts?

I have looked at her closely b/c that is what I thought also and never saw a bug.....she is with others who have no bugs either. Wouldn't ya think the others would have issues also? Tks C

Hit the "reply" button at the bottom of the thread and a new screen will open up. There is a spot to add attachments there.

Tried to add photo says the file is too big. Is there any way to shrink it so it will fit.

I use paint to shrink pictures. If you go to Image and choose stretch/skew you can reduce the size of the picture. I usually reduce it by 50% to begin with and then go from there.

All...just wanted to let you know she got better spontaneously!!! Got feathers and everything. She had been with the reddiness and no feathers since the beginning (at least) of summer. I went away for the week end and came back to feathers and no sign of reddiness!! I guess this falls in the category of miracle. I am very pleased to say the least. Thanks for all the input

Glad 'it' resolved itself. Since none of the above replies solved it, I might speculate: Too many roosters?
