YIPPEE EASTER PEEPS!! I can't believe it, this is SO COOL!! So far we have two hatched and looking spunky, and two more eggs pipped. I am so excited words just won't do!! I'll try and post a pic later but momma hen is not exactly showing them off with pride, and I don't want to disturb her much til the others are hatched. Do you just put chick starter and water nearby and momma lets them out after all are hatched?
I am so excited I might have to repost this in new thread!!

They'll be fine for 2-3 days. You don't have to give them anything until she leaves the nest. Congrats!

I'm new to WTPCF. I teamed up with Dave (auto5man) in this Cuckoo Marans hatching eggs experience. After telling him for about 2 and a half weeks that I had a seriously broody hen, I mentioned that I might look for some eggs for her to set. Next thing I know a5man is meeting rinksgi to buy eggs and bringing them over. This has been one of the coolest things I've been a part of in a while. Although not really a big part of as I didn't supply the eggs, I never sat on the eggs, she set and hatched them in one of the regular laying boxes (finally made it non-broody hen proof 2 days before the hatch), and didn't finish the brooder/grower pen until after the hatch. But we're proud to have 8 chicks in the process. If wing sexing is accurate, then it appears that of the 8 there are 6 girls and 2 boys. The 2 boys are definitely lighter in color, also (not betting the house on this - maybe a Coke).
Anyhow, I do have one question for now. Is it necessary to give the chicks anything other than medicated starter for health reasons?

I find they need less care with the broody. You can't go wrong giving some vitamins in the water for a few days.
