Hello everyone,
I am am new here and found this site from yahoo group west tn chicken club. I was a member there but not very active. I would love to have a couple of chickens to keep and watch and for eggs too. I live in town here so almost certain I am not supposed to have them but going to ask the nieghbors if they mind. That way I don't get told on. Plus maybe I could brib them with eggs when and if i got some chickens. hahahaha. Plus I just Chickens are a pretty fowl. Was thinking some small bantams might be good for city life. Thanks egg1989

Hi egg1989! Welcome to the group, we are a very active club so don't worry about missing the sale yesterday. We've always got another one just around the corner somewhere. The next meet in Jackson is Saturday April 14th at Tractor Supply.
Afraid I can't help you with any birds. All I've got right now is turkey and duck. Will have speckled Sussex chicks next week but those are no where near banty size......good luck!

HELLO eggs1989 & WELCOME! I live in center-city Jackson near Lambuth campus (was Lambuth University, now U of Memphis-Lambuth Campus) and I have standard layers...no roosters for noise violation...bribery of your neighbors is the best idea. It has worked for me for over 2-years!
I have 15-layers and donate what I do not keep for my own use to either elderly neighbors or to RIFA, our local soup kitchen. It is just a wonder and a thrill to offer fresh, medicated-free and steroid-free good tasting eggs to others. And this group on here are a good bunch of folks and very helpful and informative. You made a wise choice to join!

Hello and welcome eggs1989. I live in Hornbeak so we're neighbors. We will be having some swaps near us and we're talking about having a big swap here in Hornbeak when the craft show is at rellfoot lake.
I have mostly bantams. I raise mostly silkies and I have sizzles and oegb's, a pair of fantail pigeons and quail. Oh and some orpington hens that are mainly just for our egg eating use. My big roo died last week so the eggs aren't fertile so no chicks from them.
I have some sizzle chicks and oegb chicks. I'm thinking I have 2 boys and a girl with the oegb's but their eggs are really small. The sizzles I 'm almost sure of 2 girls but the others only time will tell.
You may need to check what the city ordinance is on raising chickens in town. Quail may be a possibility even. They're not as noisy as chickens. The eggs are way small for breakfast but are good for potato salad or little deviled eggs. But the quail meat is really good. They hatch fast, grow fast and processing is fast.
Just a thought.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome. Chowdown, I guess your right. I should check to see what the ordinances are in my area before I go and get my hopes up. I never thought about quail though. And they are very tasty. But never tried the eggs before. I will have to give that some thought. Thanks

The eggs taste just like chicken eggs. In the winter I don't hatch the eggs, I give them to my nephew and he will boil n peel them and eats them like popcorn. He loves them. He'll also put some in a pickle jar with the pickle juice and let set a few days and eat them that way. One of our family Christmas dinners I made a whole bunch of deviled eggs out of the quail eggs and what silkie eggs I had and they loved them. It was alot of work but the egg tray looked so cute with all those mini eggs.

Welcome Egg1989 from Memphis, TN!
I am new here too, and chickens are a relatively new hobby for me...since last summer. I love my flock, they have provided eggs for us and our neighbors and ENDless fun for our family and friends.
