Just got home from work and found mother hen plucking at new wing feathers of chicks. She is not doing anything else aggressive towards them. I have pulled her out of the brooder and left the chicks in it with a heat light. She is staying right beside the pen not leaving it at all. Not sure if it is a protective thing or if she just wants those new feathers. I have to admit that I am a little disturbed by this as she has seemed to be the perfect mother until now.
If anyone is familiar with this sort of thing please give me some advice.

Sounds odd to me. I'd put her back with them and keep an eye on her. You might put an apple in with them. Give her something to peck and take her mind off the chicks

Just fed her 2 scrambled eggs and a handful of dried purple hulled peas. She sounds like a hog at a feed trough.

i would agree with gina. do you have a heat lamp on them with the mother in there with them? Or she might just be bored.

Make sure they have room to get around. If they are crowed they will peck each other. I would watch them very carefully because the pecking can go from bad to worse. Sounds like she bored and crowded
