I have a question about the multi-layer bators. I have one that theoretically I could set four trays of eggs however I put another thermometer in there and found a distinct difference in the temp from top rack to bottom rack. What do ya'll do and how could I adjust temp so I don't cook some and not the others or keep some too cool?

Mine stays pretty even throughout. Most multi shelf incubators have a fan to circulate the air. You could check to be sure the fan is running. Also if there are 2 sets of ventilation holes (ours has a set at the top and at the bottom). If one set is open and the other closed try opening each set slightly so cooler outside air is distributed evenly. Not sure if any of that will help, hope so.

I don't have a multilayer bator but i've read that if you do what Backwood Barns says to do it's suppose to fix that problem. I read you can use tape over the holes by just covering part of the hole and leave a few hours and check the temp. If it still is too cool at the bottom or top to open a little more and wait again. If the holes are already open you want to close them little by little.

thanks everyone I have to look more closely when I get home. I think however mine just has a opening on the top (it is homemade) and I guess since hear rises plus the heater is at the top that is the reason it is less even. This one has two fans (both working). I I think the reason it is cooler below is b/c the tray blocks the warm air from going down. I have the auto turn trays. The bator has three levels but I have to get this figured out before I add shelves. Thank you.

I would think the heat needs to mounted on the bottom . Heat goes up .might make it hold temp better

I've never seen one with a heater on the bottom.... Could be but you'd have to be careful with a bottom element as when the chicks hatch they fall/jump down and they'd be right on top of it with no way to escape if they get hot. I generally don't trust homemade simply because so much can go wrong. If its a wood cabinet you could add more holes to the hot spots or it could be the fans aren't right so the air doesn't circulate enough or possibly the element isn't big enough for the area. I'm sure its fixable but I'd only try one thing at a time. Also be sure to watch your humidity if you start changing the ventilation!
