I have had chickens for 2 1/2 years now. But Ihave a problem that I don't know what to do with. I have started a new set of chicks and they have been doing fine. I moved them from inside to outside about 1 month ago. At that time I noticed that one of my Reds had all their feathers gone around the vent and up under her body. I assumed it was mites so I cleaned the hen house, put diatamaceous earth in the house with new pine shavings, cleaned the ground inside of coop and put a layer of pine shavings on the ground. Also put the diatamaceous earth on the hens. Only one had this plight. Now 2 of my new chicks, which are 3 months old has the feathers gone all the way up under their necks. I've cleaned up good again, and don't know what to do. Is this a disease and why don't all of them have it then. If it's mites how to I get rid of them. Thanks for any help. I've searched the internet and answers weren't very clear. Thanks

I had an issue with lice with one of my pullets. It's very strange because she's lived indoors and in the same pen as George. George don't have lice. The article I read said to put Sevin Dust in a paper bag and put the bird in with it's head sticking out the top. Hold the bag closed around it's neck and gently shake the bag to get the Sevin Dust in the feathers real good. Repeat in 2 weeks.
I did it and she is now lice free. I have no idea where she got them and why they where just on her. I did treat the other birds as well.
Lice hang out around the vent area and it said they lay their eggs at the feather shaft there also. I found the eggs just under her beak. I plucked the feathers that where infested with eggs. The lice don't look like what humans get nor do the eggs.
The Sevin Dust also takes care of the mites as well as lice. You can spread it around in the bedding too. Just not on the ground or where it will get injested.
Hope it helps.

I have had good luck with pyremithin in a sprayer. It gets in all the nooks and crannies. I have also made up a bucket of mixture and dipped them

I have also made up a bucket of mixture and dipped them I bought some of that but I can't read the label on how to mix it. The writing is too small. I haven't gone to get new glasses yet so I use Sevin Dust. I really want to spray down all the pens since we didn't have much of a winter to kill off the bugs. How much to mix to a gallon
