One of my silkies has been very very skinny for quite a while now. I consulted an avian vet online and he instructed me on how to solve one of her problems. He's changed his website and I can't contact him thru email anymore and need more help. She's been treated for gut problems with corrid. She had a round of that then probiotics then vita pro B. But she still wasn't eating hardly any at all. Well, I finally got her to eat a concoction I make for a treat but she still isn't gaining weight. Sometimes she poos out something that just looks about as odd as can be. It's a pale yellow and looks to be some kind of tissue. Next time she does it i'll take it to the vet to see if they can find out what it is. I'm wondering if there is some kind of internal parasite that chickens can get that normal worming meds do'nt work on and the parasite just don't let the bird get any nutrients. Or maybe some sort of illness that will do it. I really hope some organ hasn't stopped working.
What I'm giving her to eat is a mixture of cooked rice white and brown, salmon, boiled eggs crushed up with the shell, fresh chopped spinach, chopped apples or applesauce, (whichever I have at the time) green peas. I fried some crappie filets last night so she had her fill of that too. Today I gave her some green beans and carrots from our supper. I keep her bowl with food in it and she is eating more and more everyday. I"m giving her the vita pro b still in her water. I also give her yogurt when I have it. I gave her ACV one day in her water to firm up her poo. The diet she's on I believe is why she's having the poos she's having. She refuses to eat layer crumbles. I gave her 2 days to eat a bowl of it and she just sat there and didn't eat at all. So I can't have her not eating anything so I went back to the mixture. I give her whatever I can get her to eat. She always knows when I take her bowl out that i'll bring back some goodies and she waits at the door for it. She is in the house in a cage. She don't get any excersize unless I take her outside for a stroll and she don't move around much. She moves real slow and she's not steady on her feet either.
If anybody has any ideas or may know what the problem is please let me know. She has been going thru this since august. And i've been trying to get her well.
Another idea I had is maybe she ate something toxic from the dirt. I'm hoping if thats the case it will work it's way out of her system if I can get enough nutrients and vitamins in her to keep her going.
The vita pro b is what the vet said to give her and of course bought it from him and also the probiotics. He said the Vita Chick brand is crap that TSC carries. IDK but I want her to have what will work. I have some poly vi sol with no iron that I use on chicks that need a little boost if they had a rough start. I haven't given her any of it but I plan to start putting some in her water.
I think thats all that I have done and described her issue. Oh, maybe this will help too. I can feel her pelvic bones, they are very pronounced and her breast bone is too. I can feel every inch of it as if there is no meat there at all. We've all ate chicken breast so just imagine removing all that breast meat and feeling the breast bone and that cartilage with skin and feathers over it. It's not quite as bad now as it was but this long being that thin just has to be very bad for her. The only thing other than layer pellets she won't eat is black oil sunflower seeds. She will literally toss them out of her cage. From what I understand they help put weight on birds. I also hear that blueberries will help intice her to eat more. So when I get yogurt I get the kind with real blueberries in it but the problem with yogurt is it's fat free. I need fat full.
