I'm looking for a DR Smith DVM that is in Jackson. I've been searching the web and can't find her. I was told by another vets office that this DR may be able to help me, or my chicken more like it.
The hen i've had that has been ill since August of last year needs surgery. I finally discovered that she is an internal layer. It's a good thing that i've been giving her antibiotics off and on or she would be dead already. From the research on internal layers i've discovered the only way to save her is a hysterectomy. My vet said that I could get it done alot faster if I found a vet that is experienced in this sort of thing. He said he would have to do research and study on it before he would even attempt it. So I'm trying to find a vet that could now. If I can't i'll ask him if he would give it a shot. She will die eventually if I don't have this done and I don't want her to die.
What will happen is the white part of the egg will keep building up and press against her lungs and heart and kill her. The yolk gets absorbed thru her bloodstrream and it recognizes it as a foriegn object and fights if off and she ends up with an infection, eventually ecoli. If the infectiona nd fluid build up don't kill her the accumulation of the clear part of the egg will. It turns into a rubbery substance. She has passed pieces of this rubbery stuff off and on and lately the pieces have gotten larger.
So if somebody can please find this Dr Smith's number so I can call and ask I would greatly appreciate it. The other vet said this doctor is a female. That may help when looking in your phonebook.
Thanks for the help in advance. I'm hoping this surgery doesn't cost an arm and a leg so I can afford to have it done. If I can't i'll just have her put down so she don't suffer a horrible death. I've gotten very attached to her more l like a pet than like livestock. I purchased her for a breeding program and I do realize that removing her reproductive organs will eliminate her from laying eggs but at this point I want her to be alive. She is very sweet and would still be showable just wouldn't lay any eggs.
