I'm new to raising chickens.problem is I have eight hens in one pen,4 nest boxes.all my hens want to lay in the same box as if the other ones are no good.now I have one over last few days that's trying to go broody.she wants to set but also seems to change her mind as the day wares on as if she's not sure that she wants to brood or not!now I have a new problem.I have another hen that is hurting her and pecking her in head when she sets, running her off the nest then setting for a minute herself, then desiding she don't want to,just long enough for the first hen to get back on and repeating the cycle.now after a while they both abandon the nest.what do I do?

if you have a separate pen you can isolate the broody hen to prevent picking and fix up a nesting box for her to sit on the eggs with out problems. She wont stay on the eggs until she feels she has enough to try to hatch. that's just what i have experienced.

Thanks,I did take the problem hen out for now.I did think of seperating the setter and eggs, however all my pens are full so until I can build a seperate pen for brooders I guess that's all I can do. I thought there may be a way to in courage the others to go to one of the other boxes, but I guess they all want the same nest.as far as the amount of eggs,I took six out of box yesterday and left seven this morning there are eleven.

I would suggest spreading the eggs around or putting some decoys in the other nests. Also, if she is a new layer, she may not be broody, she may just like sitting in the nest. I have observed pullets close to laying age play "house" by getting in and out of the nests, just like the big girls.
