Hello fellow poultry friends!
My name is Robert and I've been personally raising fowl since 2000 although I've been around poultry basically my whole life thanks to my parents, grandmother and uncle. In high school, I was real active in FFA and was fortunate enough to win the West TN Poultry production SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) 3 years straight from 04-06. This is where I also gained my nickname "Chicken Man". I've been a part-time employee at R&J Feed in South Jackson since graduating high shool in 05, (The SAE carries over to 1st yr in college) where I'm also known as "Chicken Man". Before I started work there I used to set up at their animal trade days, selling birds for a little extra spending money while in school. Many of their "chicken" customers are also my personal customers and I enjoy talking and enteracting with all of them. Just being employed there has successfully built my customer base. I sometimes set up at Huntingdon on Tuesdays during the summer when I have surplus to sell. I don't really consider myself a farmer- I'm just a good ole country boy and I try to keep my operation small- usually around 100 birds or so all sizes during the peak season. I received an Associates Degree in Agri-Business from Jackson State in May 2008 and am currently pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Marketing at Lambuth and should be finished after this fall. I currently have or have had many varieties of chickens, banties, guineas, ducks, geese, turkeys and peacocks. I enjoy cross-breeding and having a multi-colored chicken yard. I always order purebreed pullets every year and then hatch a mixed batch or two later- although I have on occassion separated certain birds to hatch purebreds. I think the idea of this club is awesome and I hope in the future I can help someone and be helped by someone. It's a fun little hobby and business and I learn something new everyday and I hope I can continue to do this the rest of my life.
