Just thought I'd share some information for those of you that currently have or have had mites on your birds or in your hen houses. This time of year as the weather gets hotter I usually have a bout or two with mites on my birds (Ironically it seems to happen around the fourth of July every year!). There are two types of mites- feather mites and leg mites- leg mites are usually my problem. I've found two great methods of caring for fowl with mites. First off, I sprinkle Sevin-dust on my roost poles and on my hen house floor. (There are other brands such as Hi-Yield that are usually a little cheaper and work just as good) The birds will take dust baths in it and get it on their feathers and/or legs and in a few days the mites will be gone. If that doesn't work or if I have a severe problem, I close the chicken house doors (after the birds are out in the chicken yard for the day) and set off 4 to 5 smoke bombs and smoke them out. This really gets rid of them fast! Every New Year's and 4th of July I always stock up on smoke bombs when I buy fireworks just in case I need them later on in the year.

It's easy and for some weird reason, its little fun! Just be quick and get out of the way. I guess its about like using a fogger or a Raid bomb. Oh by the way, burnt oil on the roost poles works too.
