When it's time to worm your birds- (This time of year is usually when I have to) a good wormer to use is Wazine 17 Poultry and Swine wormer. It's a pink substance that you apply to their drinking water- the amount of course depends on how many birds you have, their age and how many or how large your watering troughs are- instructions are on the bottle. It is good idea to worm poultry regularly as both a precaution and a prevention measure although I, like others, only worm them as needed. It is important to remember when using this wormer not to eat the eggs for 14 days after the treatment is given. And of course any sick bird or birds need to be isolated from the others.

An all-natural method of de-worming is to plant Mugwort ( Artemisia vulgaria) around your chicken yard. The birds like to eat it, and it purges the worms. A side benefit is that mugwort also repels mites! You may not find the seeds everywhere (as it is often classified as an invasive weed), but a California seed company does sell them. A packet of over 10,000 seeds costs $2. www.jlhudsonseeds.net They offer many hard-to-find seeds. I have used them for years.

For many centuries mugwort has been used in humans for worming. It has several other 'medicinal' uses too. It is also known as Sailor's Tobacco, and Felon's Herb. Herbal teas are said to induce vivid dreams.

Wazine is not, in my opinon a good way to worm. The FDA has come out with a statement that says if you EVER use Wazine you should NEVER use the eggs or eat the meat. It is a poison and is not good. Used to be you were supposed to with hold eggs for three weeks, expensive, and now they say never use the eggs. I haven't tried Mugwort but I do use VERMX. It is all natural and will in no way hurt your chicks or eggs. You can go on using the eggs with no problem. I would encourage you to NOT use Wazine.

In the commercial egg business, they use NOTHING. Why pay for medications to save a hen that will cost you 25 cents to REPLACE ? About the only 'treatment' used with commercial operations is the incinerator.

Interesting posts I will keep them in mind- If Wazine is that bad they should pull it from the market like they've been doing everything else lately. It's a good seller at our feed store and I had no problems with it nor have I heard anyone else complain about it. Well it's not going to bother me b/c like I said earlier I usually only worm as needed and since my flock changes on a monthly basis and I isolate all sick birds to begin with, I can go without it. I was probably the first one in my family to ever worm birds to begin with. I know we don't carry mugwort seeds and I'd never heard of trying pumpkin seeds before (learn something new everyday) but I'll do something. By the way, tell me where those 25 cent hens are- ha!

25 cent hens are what the commercial hen houses use...if you buy 5-10 thousand per month, that's what you pay. Wazine is POISON. It kills worms, and poisons eggs and meat in its process. You would be better off (and safer) eating store bought eggs than those produced by Wazine-treated hens. Commercial egg producers would NEVER use Wazine because the cost to de-worm one chicken would be far more than her worth to them...especially if they couldn't legally sell her eggs for several weeks. Let me repeat myself...Wazine is POISON!
