How old do chicks need to be before they can really be put out side in a coop? Without heat and what not.

At this time of year, I'd say after their 5th week in the brooder. If it was November, you might want to give 'em another week if they weren't getting crowded. If they are getting crowded, throw 'em out NOW. Over-crowding is much worse for them (coccidiosis, feather picking, cannibalism, etc) than the cold & wet.

I believe you are suppose to raise the heat off of them enough for the temp on the brooder floor to lower by 5° each week. I got my first hatch on Feb. 24th and I plan on taking them out of the brooder box and putting them in the coop on the 31st. They are getting pretty big though and they might not wait that long before they start picking on one another.

5 weeks sounds about right. They should be feathered out by then. Just make sure they have shelter from those chilly nights.
