I looked in on my first broody this afternoon and the eggs that were supposed to be chicks tomorrow, are chicks today! She was on 9 eggs and 8 have hatched. She is still covering the 9th egg. I love broodies.

You know, I find that the best thing to do with broodies is to isolate them and leave her alone. I have changed her water and food one time, and other than that, I haven't even opened the door.

I am so jealous that you have fertile eggs and now little ones! My pullets, soon to be real hens and one year old, are molting so badly, at least half anyway, but I have some new chicks coming soon anyway. My "Gina" pullets are still not molting yet but have now stopped laying altogether. I wish every day I lived out of town and had more land..."oh to sleep, perhaps to dream"....of LAND!

I read somewhere that when you use an incubator it is 21 days but if you let mother nature and momma incubate it is only 20 days.

I can sex them about 75-85% correct. Seems like I have better luck the younger they are. I have a few double barred roosters,so sometimes I have double barred male chicks. Those are hard to tell.
