Anybody have suggestions on how to care for a wound on a chicken? I have a hen that was attacked by our dog a year or so ago. He broke her wing, and it didn't heal right, so it kind of hangs down lower than the other. She does not like the roo to get her and always fights (I think it hurts her messed up wing). Yesterday he got her and she had a little spot where the muscle was showing. He got her again today and now it's a large spot with muscle showing. It's not bleeding much now, and other than appearing a little sore she seems okay. We sprayed it with wound care spray we got for our dog. I'm mostly worried about it getting infected since it is so wet and nasty outside and she usually ends up on a lower roost at night and gets covered in poo. Any advice?

Cool. Thanks, Herb. After nursing her back from almost being eaten by the dog, I'm kind of attached to her.

The best thing to do with injured poultry is to isolate them from the rest. If they have open wounds they should be kept where flies and other bugs can't get to them either.
As far as the chicken, I would first isolate her from the rest and put neosporin (with out pain reliever) on it. Keep her away from the rest till the wound is healed. The other chickens will peck at it if they see red.
The turkey....hmm... I would also isolate it in a space too small for it to flail it's wings. I would feel for broken bones in the wing. If none there feel around it's body for injuries and broken bones. If it is a broken wing I would attempt to wrap it's wing in the position they normally hold them which is folded and secure it to it's body with what ever I could find that would stay. I would keep it wrapped for about a week then check it to see if it's holding it right. If not I would wrap it back for another week.
I've never had to fix a broken wing but if I had to thats what I would do.
I have had some prety bad injuries from quail pecking each other to a chicken getting the skin ripped off it's neck almost completely and they've healed.
One thing you don't want to do if you can help it is wrap an open wound with gauze. It sticks to the wound and creates a whole other problem. Been there done that.

That's good to know chowdowns. I've got a white duck that got stuck in the water...how I have no idea but the other birds about plucked her bald. I had already separated her but had no clue what to do for the sores. First thing I thought was to wrap it. Glad I haven't yet. Does wound spray do better than the neosporin?
