I decided to NOT wait till dark tonight and introduced 6 chicks to my little setty BO hen, adding one chick at a time, removing a golf ball each time. She immediately started preening her back feathers, fluffing up even more and working the little hatchlings up into her back fluff as well as under her now even fluffier body. I just checked on them again, some 2-hours after introduction and she is "talking" to them softly and them to her.
Both mother and children are doing fine...I'm a GRANDFATHER! Here, have a cigar on me! She is one of my little chicks from last April and I could not be more pleased....no need in heating up the brooder or worrying about their protection basically. I think she will be just fine. Thanks to all who had input under my post about the broody hen!

I got 7 total today from R & J.....5-Wellsummers, 1-white standard White Cochin & 1-standard Buff Cochin! One of the Wellsummers looked a little weak later in the day so I got another Cochin as a back up...but for now here at 4:30pm everyone is alive, kicking, clucking and eating including mama.
Thanks for all the support...another GREAT THING about this group...looking out for each other!

6:54 pm update on the brooding....chicks are getting in and out of the nest unassisted, eating and drinking then right back under mom, aka...Dorothy from the Golden Girls as she is a big Buff Orp., and she is eating again on the nest as well. I think she will have them out in a day or two in their secluded area but for now all are content and very warm under her wings and again, I could not be more thrilled with this outcome!
