In case someone is worried...this is not their only small space but a weather proof box with a metal top that is attached to a rabbit cage, all on the ground where both mother and chicks are free to roam and move about as wanted/needed. This is just where she was able to be alone when brooding her golf balls in a dark, secluded area away from the other hens and have her own space. Chicks can come as go as they please as well as mom. Seems to be working well....as with all of US, I use what I have and with a few modifications, we have coops, brooders, whatever we need. Necessity is truly the mother of invention, right, Timbo? My house chicken George went broody so I gave her some fertile eggs. It'll be cute to watch her with the chicks.
BTW, I named her George because I thought she was a he till she started laying eggs. She's never been with a roo so her eggs aren't fertile.

Hmmmm, I am wondering the same thing. Sounds like a pet to me! So NOW we know who "rules the roost" there! Very cute...

Yes, house chicken. She lives in the dining room in a cage. She does get out to play and cuddle. But now she's sitting on some eggs so she don't want to get out now. Attachments:

I even decorated her cage for Christmas. Her bed skirt is still on her nest as you can see. She had lights around her cage with a back drop of the same material as her bed skirt. There was snowflake garland and a small tree on top of her cage. She had Christmas dinner too. Not at the table of course.

Yep...just what I was afraid of...now we must do an intervention! Or maybe an exorcism or worse! Just kidding of course. How cute is that whole thing or what! With WHOM does she play? And when she had Christmas dinner, did she have any kind of "fowl" as the entree? So many questions on this one and so little time...

She plays with the grandsons. She will hide under the coffee table and run out at us when we walk by. If the cat gets to close or she suddenly notices her laying on the floor she will attack to chase her away. The cat doesn't bother her at all but I guess George just has to show her whos boss. When we had the Lab she would be laing on the floor and George would stand there and pick fleas till the dog got tired of getting pecked at and she would just get up and leave the room.
Her Christmas dinner was Turkey, mashed potatos and green beans and a biscuit. She loves Pizza. If she is out when we have it she will stand and beg like a dog waiting for us to toss her a morsel. Since she can't hardly see out of one eye we usualy just hand it to her. If we toss it she will get frantic looking for it.
She definately has her own personality. When I let her out to free range with the other silkies she always goes off to herself. When it gets late she will be hanging out around the porch for me to come and get her. She don't climb the stairs. She doesn't perch either. She will on the side of her nest but she prefers to sleep in it.
Of course right now she has eggs she's sitting on so she hardly comes out of her nest.
When I pick her up and cradle her like a baby she will rub her head on my arm then lay it there like she is cuddling. If I put her on the couch with me she will cuddle up and go to sleep.
If she wasn't sitting on eggs I would bring her with me to the swap in Trenton. She loves attention.

Thank you Thank you. No intervention needed. If I had more than one house chicken then I would say HELP PLEASE!!! I keep my chicks in the house in brooders till they are able to deal with the weather. It can become overwhelming in the winter but we deal with it. Alot of time cleaning. Summer is better. They go out sooner. I use our spare room and there are 3 incubators and 3 brooders. I'm hoping Bobby gets the cabinet incubator built soon. I sure could use the space and room for more eggs.
