When I went home Friday one of my Americana hens was dead. I have not idea why. No visible injuries, she was in the run and nothing could get in. She had a little, very little blood a quarter of an inch up from her vent. Nothing else. She was young, one and a half, very healthy. Did not show any distress except for the blood. I am stumped and a little worried b/c I truly do not have a clue what happened to her. Any one had a similar experience or any ideas???

cks4me,
This might NOT be an issue but chickens are sometimes prone, well maybe prone...but they are the only other animal besides humans that can spontaeously develope ovarian cancer that races fast. I read this last year when I was just getting my chicks. Of course one would have to do some digging to verify ANYTHING that did happen to her by way of a veterinarian post-death check...basically an autopsy. They can also get cancer in the oviduct, which could cause blockage, etc. and cause this issue. They are also known to have bone cancer. I know this is a lot but am just trying to send you a lead.
I might vote with Timbo though on being egg bound...was the blood coming from the vent or external cut in skin or other, might be a starting point. Good luck. Just guessing and what I have read is all I am offering.

When our Wyandotte was egg bound she was very listless for several days before she died. I don't recall seeing any blood (my husband checked to see if she was egg bound and pulled the egg out-it was a soft egg, no shell), but she wasn't eating or drinking and had really nasty poop for days. We have had chickens just up and die for no reason with no injuries before, too. We usually keep an eye on everyone for awhile just to make sure, but usually it's just one that dies.

I read an article that a hen can develope a kidney infection and show no signs of sickness. They will die from it if it's not caught in time. My guess would be egg bound though if there was blood. I've had a couple that where egg bound and I used a small syringe (no needle) and filled it about halfway with mineral oil and shot it up the vent. They laid their egg a few hours later. My first hen that got egg bound, died. I didn't know what to do. She also had blood around her vent

Yes, Allie is right...sometimes they just die for no real reason you can find out about. Hopefully it is a one time thing and all is and will be well with the rest of the flock.

Thanks everyone. I just don't know. I did find one very big egg that day and have wondered if she layed it could that have done it. Maybe she tore or something. I appreciate all the input. Wish I would have been able to autospy her but just couldn't bring myself to do it.
