Hi, Everyone. What is your favorite way to kill a chicken to get him ready for plucking and cooking? I tried the "chop off the head with an axe" method, and boy was that messy. I had blood all over the place. I am thinking of using the killing cone method and after he is passed out, to use regular tree trimming loppers to off the head. We have read of several ways to do it, but were wondering what ya'lls tried and true methods were.
Thanks, Gus

Have you tried wringing the necks? We've done that a few times. After the neck is wrung you can chop the head to bleed them out. It's easier than holding them to chop a head with an ax. We've also taken the approach of chicken "hunting". A nice way of saying we shot them. It worked well also.

I'm glad you stepped up and said something about the hunting method. I didn't want to seem to be cruel and the only one that does it. But that would be my method also.

That's ok. Leave it to me to be the one that mentions hunting something lol. Don't get me wrong, I love my animals, all animals, but I 100% believe in killing for food, protection of me and my family/animals/property. But yeah, glad we aren't the only ones hunting the chickens.

We hang them from the clothes line and when they are calm, we swiftly cut off the head with a sharp knife. This has them contained and the blood drains pretty much in one place. After thoroughly draining the blood, we submerge the carcass in hot(not boiling)water and pull the feathers out.

I do the same thing as rinksgi but I never cut the whole head off. I try to just get the jugular veins with a fillet knife first and let them bleed out. After a few minutes with the heart still pumping blood I will go ahead and take the head off. My problem is that I free range and most of the dark meat is sort of gamey usually. I know that I should select younger roos, put them up and feed them grain and I definitely brine for a few days but does anyone have any suggestions on making the dark meat better? Oleredhen, a mean rooster at my place doesn't stand a chance. I have NEVER been flogged TWICE by the same rooster. Hahahaha.
