I was wondering who all raises wyandotts and what kinds? We were looking into starting a flock since they're pretty to look at, a good size for meat, and are brown layers. My main concern is I've read that because of all the plumage they have problems with mating and clogged vents. Love to hear from people who are experienced with the birds what they think about them.

I love them. I haven't had any problems with clogged vents they are good layers even during this 100 degree weather i get lots of eggs. I haven't had much luck with them brooding like I feel they should but my rooster runs them hard and have a good hatch rate. I have GL, SL, and Blue laced Reds. I have several experimental colors also. I dont currently have any for sale. But maybe next year.

Thanks Timbo. I like the blue lace and the silver. Haven't seen a gold yet. Just in looking them up we are thinking those might be a good breed for us but the vent problems had me a little worried. Last thing we need is chickens we have to chase down to groom regularly!

We have some Gold Laced and Silver Laced Wyandottes. They are beautiful. I love them. We don't have a rooster (can't find anywhere to get a full grown one), but are keeping our eyes open for one. We did have one get egg bound and die, but other than that no issues. Like Tim said, we are getting eggs from them. One went broody a month or so ago. She sat her eggs like a trooper in this horrible heat, but they didn't hatch (they were banty eggs and part Serama-we haven't had much luck with them hatching).

She is pretty. I know I can get some from one of the hatcheries but I'm just not sold on the quality of something I can't see first. The book we get is all drawings of the birds and most of the time it doesn't do them justice. The drawing of the GL doesn't really look like that at all (just tan with black ruffles basically but the drawings of the SL and the red BL looked that way too.) Did yours get egg bound because of the blocked vent? The more I see these birds the more I like them. How long have you raised wyandotts?

I don't want to have to order a bunch of them so we've never done a hatchery order. Mike (gardendaddy) got some for me from R&J feed in Jackson in May. You can probably get some from them next spring. I think they are done for the year. I agree, though, you can't tell much from the drawings in the hatchery books. I don't think ours was egg bound from a clogged vent. After she died we checked to see if she was egg bound and the egg wasn't formed right. It was really soft and actually popped after we got it out. I think it was just too soft for her to lay. We bought our first two Wyandottes at the Ripley flea market last year, so we haven't had them long and we don't have too many-just 4. We're hoping to find some more at Ripley this year, if we ever make it.

I'm hoping to get to ripley this month. Never been but heard good things about it. We were hoping to find some before spring even if we ended up having to incubate a few eggs. Then again if we do have to wait it will give us plenty of time to build the pen

We went to the one in gleason one time, didn't get there til it was close to over so we didn't get to look at any of the animals up close but I was mostly shocked by how roughly they were handled. If those had been my animals is have been ?!$$@&

You don't always find healthy birds at Ripley, but the plus is that it is a flea market and you see everythng before you buy it. The guy we bought the Wyandottes obviously took care of his birds and sold them very cheap. We wish we had bought more. We also bought our duck and our billy goat there. You just have to be careful what you buy and talk to the people you buy them from.

It's the First Monday flea market and is the weekend before the first Monday of every month. So the next one would be Sept. 3. because the first Monday in September is the 5th.

Shoot, that's the same day as the show in Memphis. Looks like I've gotta pick....do they sell birds at the show or just show them? I want to go to the show but I really need to get some chickens and a few bronze turkeys or we won't have anything old enough breed next spring.
