I started to not add my blog as a few of you already know about it but thought to add it for those guest or folks just looking in at us. Visit: www.gardendaddy.blogspot.comI talk about my ca. 1923 Arts & Crafts cottage in the historic area of town, gardening and raising my backyard poultry flock in an urban setting, the center of "in-town" Jackson, TN., near Lambuth University, now the U. of Memphis-Lambuth Campus. I also currently am the co-coordinator of one of the Jackson Community Garden sites, as well as being a U. of TN Certified Master Gardener, a member of JABA (Jackson Area Beekeeper's Assoc.) and the best thing of all...a member of the West TN. Poultry Club! FYI: I am not currently keeping bees but have that as a plan for the possible near future...maybe next spring, depending on several issues currently present. In case anyone is interested, I was not aware until I took the 7-hour shortcourse last spring and became a member, that one must register your hives, even 1-hive, with the State of TN Dept of Ag, due to the fact that if there is an outbreak of hive diseases, ones hive(s) MUST be tested for viruses, etc. to keep down an epidemic from spreading, resulting in the destruction of bee colonies then the food chain, etc. There is a LOT more to beekeeping than meets the eye. Thanks for your patience in all this post above, Mike...aka...GARDEN DADDY

We had a swarm of honey bees in our yard Sunday. I called an apiary down the street and they were going to come get them. I went outside after getting off the phone and they were gone. I had never seen a swarm before. It was little scary and a lot cool. A little clump of bees stayed for a couple of days, but I think they are all gone now.

You can become a "blog follower" down lower in the blog site. As far as weeds go, my birds are not caged but basically confined in their own space. I feed them grass clippings, garden refuse, etc. and do not feed grass clippings if I have done ANYTHING chemical to the grass...I usually spray a spring weed-n-feed then add some lime, triple 13 and then around the first of June a little ammonia sulfate and then do not feed until I know it all has dissolved and been taken up into the lawn before feeding anything to them. If I spray anything in the garden, it is mostly a natural element I have found containing fish oil, castor oil and other natural indegredients, etc.
Thanks for looking in...I will join your site for sure...
Mike
