Ended up with 20 baby's. Little one still hanging in there, but about half the size of the others. I keep having trouble keeping them comfortable, with regards to temp. When I put the light as low as the literature says they are too hot. I am constantly running in there to make sure they are ok. What do the rest of you guys do? Unfortunately they are in the house b/c I did not have a broody to sock them under. (Of course I have one now which is too late). How long do they need to be in here, especially keeping in mind it is cooler in the evening than during the summer. Thanks for input.

i try to get them old enough to mach the outdoor temps at night as close as i can. If they will have a coop to get in out side i would place them in it by hand every afternoon until they go in on their own. Put them a 2"-3" layer of bedding for them to cuddle up in. I do lose some on occasion but you can only do so much for them. You can put a light in the coop also but strongly recommending bolting it to some thing stong so there isn't fire problems. I dont do it. I'm afraid of fires in the coop. Wish you luck!

Thanks Timbo but I don't have another coop to put them in. I guess they are in for a while. Just realized they are only a week old...sure seems longer than that. Feels like a new baby home from the hospital for me any way. I get totally obsessed with the right temp, enough food and water ect. I really prefer to have them with a momma. She does a much better job..

I've known of many coops burning down with chickens in it because of the heat lamp. It is very dangerous. I've never used a heat lamp in a coop but I have in a juvie pen in the winter. And it is always secured very well and the cord done in such a way the dampness doesn't short anything out. I have like a fire phobia. I'm sure there is a more technical name for it but I have it along with a few others. I have a chick right now that I think didn't fare well in the chilly nights we had and now it's damp too. It's on antibiotics more as a prevention. It was lethargic, not eating and had runny poops. It's now normal poops and eating and drinking but still not feeling well. I need to make a place for them to go where they can be warm and dry.

I have 5 right now in garage then 7 more in the incubator. I keep chicks for a about a week in a 10 gallon aquarium with a 65 watts flood light. Then change it to a 65 watt can light. Then after a few weeks they are good to go. I never hear any chirping or anything. They are just as happy as can be. Also in big coop I have a 500watt halogen lamp screwed to the wall 4 foot up so it doesn't move. And of course the coop is insulated so it stays warm in the winter.

Hatched 4 of 7 brazilian eggs. One got out of nest and chilled the other 3 look good- each one a different color. Have 2 hens on eggs and one just went broody.
