Ok I know that poultry lice is a completely normal thing but it really creeps me out. I noticed today that some of my hens have some and sadly my horse even has a few on her. What is the best thing for treating bird lice and how do I keep it from getting on my other animals or on me? Thanks.

Sevin dust should get them off the birds. I think I remember reading that they won't want to live on humans. But I could be completely wrong about that.

Are these lice, or roost mites? If you are going 'organic' you will have to skip the Sevin, and try one of the (approved) pyrethrins.

From what we can tell they are lice. I'm not worried about the organic aspect right at the moment. Just looking for the fastest way to get rid of the bugs. But I will check into those. Thanks!

I buy the concentrated pyrethin, mix it in a sprayer and spray everything. Roosts,nests,ground,chickens...everything. I did just give them all the Ivermectin treatment and I'm hoping that helps.

Oldaker, I would have to disagree that "poultry lice is a completely normal thing". I agree completely with what 8bells stated in his post. I recently had a doctor who wanted to buy a few laying hens from someone and when he showed up he did a complete examination of my birds and due to the LACK of mites that he saw he tried to buy my entire flock. My primary concern for you is that if you are seeing them on other animals then your entire barn is probably infested with mites and anemia in your animals is real close at hand. I forget the number but if you count five mites on a bird then the bird is actually carrying around 10,000 mites each. Invest your money into several bags of diatomaceous earth after completely cleaning the barn out. I hope that this didn't come off as being mean spirited because its not meant to be. I would recommend taking the natural approach but it may be too severe. Regardless of which route you take I would recommend doing your "inspection" of the birds at night with a high powered flash light. Wait until they go to roost and grab them up and check around the vent and wings. Mites are nocturnal and you will be able to see exactly how bad your problem is.
