Hello! I am a part time farming mom from Puryear, TN. My family has pigs, cows, and we raise hay. In addition, I have a very small flock of just girls that we started last year. We love them! We started out with 12 and due to age and a possum, we are down to 9. I have ISA browns, Wyanndottes, and Barred Rocks. No rooster as I was bit skeptical getting one with my kids. Our girls free range during the day. We just started this a couple months ago as we were afraid our 2 retrievers would snatch them up, but they have not. In fact, they seem to get along very well.

I am not completely sure why my wyndottes are. They a beautiful gold and black. They are really my favorite! I also have one huge white bird, but I cannot remember what she is.

Hi and welcome. I agree, wyandotts are beautiful. We don't have any yet but are planning on getting a small flock in the spring. Honestly I'm hoping Timbo will sell me some of his blue laced red chicks or eggs if he has any.

Hello, Welcome to the club! I have silver laced wyandottes and they are beautiful. I only have girls right now. Barred rocks, rhode island reds and my silver laced....twelve in all. I have seen some pictures of the gold color you have, they are pretty. Hope you enjoy all the advice and help here, lots of good people to lend a hand. Great advise. Glad you are on board.

Just to follow up to my orginal. We got passed down 6 either Barred Rocks or Dominickers hens and 1 BEAUTIFUL rooster, Barred Rock or Dominicker, named Gator. Not sure how to tell the difference between BR and D. Although I said I didn't want a rooster, he was raised very well and is SUPER gentle. He will even let you pet him. Since adding to my original flock, we have lost quite a few and now I am down to 5 BR/D hens, 1 wyandotte, and my boy, Gator. My lab has killed a few. Not sure why. One day they are pecking around her and playing with her and the next time she kills one. I think she gets to chasing them playing and her hunting side kicks in. She goes months and all in fine, then bam, we lose another girl. BUT, I am adding to my flock now. Babies are a comin!

Barred rocks have a single comb and Dominiques have a rose comb. Check out this website www.mypetchicken.com/chicken-breeds/Dominique-B44.aspx. Our first "flock" was dominique. They were great. Our rooster was evil (he once flogged me half way up my back), but two of our sweetest hens were dominiques. Hope you enjoy yours!

Well hang in there Coxm3. You will lose some thats just mothernatures way. Allie is right they aren't bad to tell difference as long as they have yellow legs. Roosters arent that bad at all. sometimes they are nicer than hens.

He is a Barred Rock. Definitely after I looked at his comb. So, since the hens all came from the same batch with him, they must be Barred Rocks also, right? Can't wait to see what my new babies turn are. They have some sort of Maran in them, but I just know I am gonna end up with 3 boys.
