First off, let me say that I love all chickens regardless of size, shape or color but over the years of raising them I've finally narrowed down my favorite breeds to two. My favorite heavy breed would have to be New Hampshire Reds. My first flock consisted of a few hens and a rooster. (you'll never forget your 1st flock- I may not remember certain birds I had last year but I'll never forget my originals lol). I kept those birds around seemed like forever. Not only do I love red chickens but I've always had the best of luck with them. Last year when I ordered 10 "pullets" I was fortunate enough to wind up with a rooster. This year I was able to separate them into a breeding coop and raise some purebreds. I've even been able to make a few pets out of NH Reds. My favorite medium breed (white egg layer) would have to be Brown Leghorns. They are simply a beautiful bird and quite interesting to watch. I especially love their flopped combs. I've never had any of the rose-comb variety but I hear they're just as good. I always have a mixture of poultry in my chickenyard but I always try to keep a few NH Reds and Brown Leghorns somewhere in the mix. I've even cross-bred them before! Talk about something neat. The result was a red medium sized pullet/hen with a flopped comb that laid big white eggs- The best of both worlds I guess.
