Herb, I would like to jump on this band wagon with you if you dont mind. I have heard horror stories about raising them but I still want to give it a shot.

I still haven't found a local source but I have 18 due to hatch in a few days and set 48 yesterday. I don't like shipped eggs.

I agree with you 100 percent about the shipped eggs, I am the same way. Hopefully you get a good hatch rate off of them. I am normally running a 90 percent or better minus the serama's, those little suckers are hard for me to hatch. Let me know what your hatch rate is if you dont mind.

I hatched 6 out of the 18 BUT as a disclaimer my power was off over 11 hours. All but 4 eggs did have chicks. I think the hatch would have been really good if the power hadn't died. FYI all 6 are healthy and growing and they are escape artists.
Oh and I still have not found a local source. I need to get a good fly pen built I guess.

Herb, have you ever raised them before? I have heard from others that they are a night mare to raise primarily due to the cocks killing each other and the flight pens that you have to build for them. Hopefully, you will keep us posted on your pheasant adventure with some tips and advice. I do know that when they go to auction they bring a premium price but all of my older friends have always talked me out of bidding on them. I have been debating on turning the other pole barn into another flight pen but dont know if I want to go the pheasant or peacock route yet.

The second batch started to hatch this morning.
I used to raise them decades ago. They are not as easy to raise as most other poultry. They never tame down. Well, at least I never had any tamed. They are nervous and energetic. They will fly when startled and break their necks on wire or other stiff covers.

It's not looking good. So far only 4 hatched. They are healthy but that leaves a whole lot of eggs. Waiting just a while longer.

The guys that raise them in Illinois use a plastic netting and telephone poles set in the ground and about six or eight feet high. And you guys are right on the money they like to kill them selves by hitting solid wire and are pretty much always crazy. But if you give them something to hide in tall grass, corn they are much less flighty.

Hey!! I forgot about this thread. I found a man in Brownsville that was getting out of the business. I showed up with money (not much mind you) in hand and saw the operation first hand. Not only did I see why he was getting out of the business but I also realized that I would rather raise cotton mouths then these things! They honestly made peacocks seem easy. I passed them all on to the next guy in line. I agree with you icacres about them killing themselves and I think that IF I ever did raise them I would be all over the plastic netting like he had. I might even try to stake the things down! The terms "crazy" and "flighty" could use a few profane adjectives in front of them. Herb, you are a better poultry man then me.

WOW! What did I get myself into? I got eggs in a swap and hatched out 1 chick so I got some more. I have broody's sitting on them now. I really don't want to deal with a bird so difficult. I may just toss the eggs under the broody's and get out while the gettin is good.
