I was just reading in a magazine (GRIT) where a lady is using snakes (colubrids such as milk, rat, and corn) for rat control in her barn. I guess it's supposed to also cut down on the number of eggs and chicks taken out by rats. Is this something anyone else has heard of or tried? Would the snakes not also get the chickens? I have a few corn snakes as pets and I know for a fact that my one girl Eden would be just as likely to take out a chick as she would be a rat. She also wouldn't hesitate to try her luck at young chickens as well as adults. Granted she's to small to eat them if they are older than a few months but she could kill them. I guess I'm more confused about why it's a good pest control.

Oldaker, I think its wild that I am trying to keep snakes out of my hen house and others are trying to keep em in! I know that rats have some serious diseases in their poop that the birds could eat but I wonder what type of diseases you would get from snake poop!

Sounds like out of the frying pan and into the fire to me. How do you train a snake to eat only rats and leave chicks and eggs alone?

I have no clue rinksgi. We have a boa that only eats rats and nothing else but I think she's just defective. As for the smaller snakes we raise though, I don't trust some of them with me let alone anything they might think is food. And these are captive raised so I can't imagine a wild one whose meals are on a as you find basis. Verlon, I'm not sure I wanna know the diseases in their poop. I might get scared and stop raising snakes lol. It just sounded like a really strange idea to me and I wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy.

I hate snakes and I wouldn't keep one around for nothing. If it comes across my path, it will die. Snakes and bees are my worst enemies besides a human theif.

My Thai chickens would eat the snakes. I'd say its not a good idea for the chickens or the snakes.
