I have a orp hen who last week looked terrible. Underneath her she was huge and hard as a rock. Her skin was even splitting from the weight and size. This was not at the vent but behind it. I swore it was egg binding but hated to have her put down. I read about it and finally in desperation put her in warm tub massaged her not hard and squirted KY up her thinking there was nothing to loose. A little later there was no change so the next day I had some egg shells I smashed up and fed her. (she never quit eating or drinking). Later that evening she began to poop and poop and poop and yucky poop. Well you get the pic, worse than a broody hen. Could find nothing on constipation but am beginning to think she had an obstruction and was not able to poop and for some reason maybe the shells helped with what ever to loosen her up. She was literally full of s---!!! Seems okay now....

Good job. I've lost hens from egg bound all where from hatchery bird's I figure the bird's where jest so inbred the bad traits where bound to come out in the offspring. This was from a long time ago ive not had any problems in years

I've used a small needless syrainge and filled it with mineral oil and shoot it up the vent for eggbound. It's worked for me but it don't happen very often at all. Give her some tuna in oil from a can. Don't drain it just open the can and give it to her. It will help loosen up anything else that may be in her digestive tract and let it pass. If it happens again eggbound or inpaction and you don't have mineral oil on hand regular vegetable oil you cook with or olive oil will work. If it's a very huge egg you would have to try to break the egg and pull out the shell and shoot water up there to wash out the egg. Pretty much any kind of oil would work. But I would definitely feed her oily foods a couple times a week to make sure it don't happen again since it was an inpaction.
I'm glad she's doing better.

We had one die from being egg bound-we didn't figure out what it was until it was too late. We put her in a sink full of warm water, which relaxed her enough we were able to get the egg out, but it was too late. My husband actually had to pull the egg out, but the warm water relaxed her enough it wasn't hard. He had to be really careful not to break the egg, which was all rubbery and soft. I'm glad that your hen is doing better now!
