We have way more than our share of mice. We have a cat that just can't keep up with the mouse population. I had an old area rug rolled up and laying on top of a cage I have some beat up quail roos in to keep the sun off of them. The other day I moved the cage and when I moved the rug a few mice ran out of it. I put it on the ground and unrolled it and there where 50 or more mice running in every direction and they left behind a nest of babies. I managed to stomp on 2 mice but the rest got away. The cat had the babies for a snack. I didn't want to put out poison because I didn't want my cat to get poisoned and also my orps will also eat the mice.
I finally gave up trying to catch them in various different ways that where suggested to me and put out poison. I found 12 dead and dying adult mice in one pen today. I know the mice are in every pen and anything else they can make a home in. I called the pest control places and they said unless my cat ate alot of poisoned mice she wouldn't even be effected by it but I wonder about my orps. They are much bigger than the cat but we normally eat their eggs. Am I right that it's not safe to eat their eggs now? I know when I worm them I can't use their eggs for eating for 3 weeks after worming. But poison will be out longer than a one time dose.
These are smart mice. They avoid the sticky traps and other than managing to get into a feed tub they don't get into a bucket that I put some feed in the bottom of. I caught 3 mice in a bucket then after that I didn't catch any. I've had more drown in water buckets than i've caught. I've thrown away so much feed because the mice poop in it and I don't want my chickens eating it. With so many mice there will be lots of snakes too. I don't do snakes. If I had my choice i'd keep the mice if the snakes didn't come around to eat them, but they do and I don't want them around either. My grandsons run around barefoot and in shorts. It's very easy for them to get bitten by one of the many copper head or cotton mouths around. Along with the water moccosins and rattle snakes. I have yet to find a rattle snake in the yard but with so many mice they are bound to find their way here.
What do you all do to control the mice?
