I just got a call that a guy had a rooster killed by knats this morning. He said it was suffocated, not full. Any one having troubles with them? How do you handle this issue guys?

I save alot of tuna cans and what I do is I poke 2 holes close to the top rim and run a zip tie or bread tie thru it and I put Apple Cider Vinegar in it and attach it to the outside of the pens. Gnats hate the smell and will go elsewhere. I've had this work for me for the past 3 years. Gnats are very annoying and they drive me nuts. I can't inagine what they do th the chickens out there all the time.

Probably buffalo flies, there has been a big hatch and I have friends losing birds, mostly young.

Aren't Buffalo Flies the ones that look like mini flies and they're black and bite or sting? If not what are those? I get stung by them every year. They hurt when they sting and leave a little blister like fire ants do.

Well I lost 3 quail today to the knats. I had poured alot of ACV all around their cages and all was looking good then it rained. Gavin got hurt the same day and I had forgotten to put more out. It's out now and I hope I don't loose anymore.
BTW, Gavin slipped in the mud while playing in it (the mud) and fell knee first in a mud hole and he now has 18 staples in it. He has several small cuts but he had 5 that had to be closed up. Something went in one and out the other. One object 2 holes. He had 3 holes that got 5 staples each then one with 2 and one with 1. It was a metal rod that went thru. Nothing is broken but he's been in alot of pain. He hasn't been able to get up and be mobile yet. So i've had to stay inside with him. I've just gone out long enough to feed and water everybody and collect what few eggs i'm getting then back in. He shouldn't be down long. He has bony knees and the staples are what is giving the most pain I expect. He goes to see his doc tomorrow and we'll know how long before the staples come out. I changed his bandages today and everything looks like it's healing good to me.
