OK yall I or my hubby rescued a bassest hound about 2 years ago. I have had chickens the whole time. But now she has decided she likes to eat my baby chicks! I have spanked and scolded her now she just grabs one when I am not looking and runs off. I had 18 now down to 10! I can't let them out of their coop anymore because of her and that worries me because their coop is temporary with no ventilation and a very small run. What should I do?

oh not good. Once they get the taste for them its hard to break. Maybe someone on here has a solution.

My mother-in-law once had a young cat that she caught with one of her chicks in its mouth. She got the roll of medical tape, and taped the dead chick to the cats neck. After a few days later, she cut off the (smelly) dead chick, and to her dieing day, the cat never ate chicken again...not even cooked!

Would that work with a dog though? They tend to like the more smelly things in life. My dogs would think it was a treat so they wouldn't have to search for something dead to roll in. Like their own personal stink stash or something.

I have heard that if you catch the chicken in their mouth or them trying to catch it and you pepper spray them in the act they will stop. I think you will have to do it more than once. I have never done this, but like I said I heard it works. It's worth a try Julie

Yeah. You are probably right; the dog would probably wear it as a badge of honor.

Thanks all yes she actually loves to roll in dead things so that wouldnt work I have only caught her in the act once and knee jerk reaction I whacked her with the paint tray that was in my hand! The neighbor keeps and eye on the babies if I let them out too so thats helping. I just dont trust her. I have even started to give her more attention thinking maybe she is bored or lonely so its been over a week since I lost one so wish me continued luck!

Hope somebody comes up with a solution, 'cause a chicken eatin' dog on a farm has less value than a beer concession at a Baptist convention.

Truth is once they get a taste they don't give up. I have scotties and they killed three before I remembered that I had hot wire. I put it up, turned it on and got great joy out of the inital squeals from them as they learned to stay back from the chicken yard. Now they will every once in a while go about two feet away but as soon as they hear the tic and smell the wire, hot, they back right off. As long as I remember to keep it on I am good but they will still try it every once in a while. It won't hurt them permanently but it will light their butts up
