grr I understand. I have 5 dogs and love the very much, but they are never near the chickens unless I'm right there, but it's always someone else dog that kills and leaves me to clean up what's left of my poor babies. Julie

shotguns leave a lasting reminder to stay away from the chickens. The dogs and cats are terrified of my yard. I shoot and don't tell. good method.

Herb, you have got to take action! How mant dogs and who do they belong to? I would visit the owners and insist they pen their dogs. There is a leash law in all of Tennessee, so the law is on your side. I had to do that several years ago when some neighbors down the road took a weekend vacation, leaving their chow dog on it's own. It wandered to my house, tore into my chicken pen and killed all but one hen. It came back later and finished her off. I first spoke to the owners, who did pay me what I asked(not hardly what year old hens were really worth),but did not pen their dog. After a couple of calls to the Sheriff's Dept, the owners were told that if the Dept. got one more call about the dog, the owners would be going to court. I have not seen the dog since. I was prepared to shoot the dog if they did not do something,as much as I would hate to do it.

I have taken action. 3-1-1 = 1
I am applying the rule my dad taught me. Don't ask, don't tell.

I have been cleaned out twice by dogs - once by 2 of my own dogs that had been around chickens all their lives. They became part of the Hatchie River Turtle Feeding Project. A good fence aroud your chickens will go a long way towards keeping them out. I have a page wire fence with four strands of electric fence on it - 3 at the bottom and 1 around the top. 2 good chicken dogs live in the yard with the chickens. One neighbor's Lab came over and wanted to eat chicken when he was young. I caught him, beat him with the dead chicken and finished up with a stick. He and I came to a meeting of the minds that day and he's as "chicken broke" as my dogs are. Dogs have caused me much more problems over the years than and other predator except hawks and owls. A good rifle is the cure to a lot of problems !

Herb I always worry about dogs out here. Mine have killed three then I got smart and put up hot wire. Just loved to hear them yelp, I know I am sick, but they did not get hurt and you can not get them past that fence for any thing. Is there any way you could string hot wire? It really isn't very expensive, it is a little work though. As most of you know I keep hot wire mesh up but probably not as much as I should. My damn neighbor who was starving the horses has let his property grow up to the point that I really am holding my breath b/c of preds living in that mess. Real shame b/c it was great horse property. Any way the way it is set up I can't put hot wire down that fence line. Sorry about your loss Herb..

P.S I would definately go to the owners. Why did your dog let them in? Did they get in a fight?

We do shoot and don't tell. Several years ago we had neighbors dogs pick off our chickens. Bobby followed the trail of feathers right to their yard and confronted the owner and he denied it. Bobby showed him the trail of feathers and when they got to where it ended the dogs where knawing on the chickens. BUSTED!! He told him he starts shooting if they come back. We never saw the dogs again at all. Then that man moved soon after.
Anymore if there are dogs in the yard that don't belong here it's Rule #1 shoot, don't tell Rule #1 discard of carcass
problem solved, till the next time anyway. lol We went for a long time with no problems at all then lost birds to coon, opossum and a dog was trying to get in the duck pen. Got 1 out of 3, other 2 haven't came back.

Friday I lost one of my oldest hens to MY dogs. The dogs were barking at her at the fence and some how must have spooked her. All I can figure out is she meant to fly the opposite way but instead flew into their yard. She was gone before I could get the 20 yards to her. Damn I hate that. I get so mad at the dogs but when the chicks fly into the yard I keep the dogs in I don't know anything to do.
