well that hen that was pushing the eggs out decided yesterday she no longer was interested at all to be a mom. I had taken all but one egg out and put in bator a while ago. However she got off the nest yesterday morning before I left for work and was still off when I got home so I grabbed that egg, marked it, and put in bator. I figure it is a really long shot but might as well try. Wish I had leg bands so I could mark her as a bad hen for hatching eggs. I don't want to use her again. Since part of the broodiness comes from genetics also part of it is the weather. It got cool, cooled her bottom and she wiped her feet of the eggs!!! ohh my. And she was on some darn expensive eggs.... If I ate chicken she would be stew.....

Cks-we use different color tie wraps for leg bands. Once we use all the colors we double them (which is how we got the chicken named blorange-she has a blue band and an orange band, and we smushed the names together). Very easy to due, and cheap, too!

They are also called cable ties. They are plastic, I guess. I just saw a big bucket of them for $8 or $9 at walmart.

Those of you who use the ties.... Do you use all the different colors? Do you find that the hens peck at certain colors? Just curious. Trying to figure out how to tell mine apart as they get older. They are growing up little by little and I can only tell a handful of them apart now. Thanks, Gayle

I think we have blue, pink, yellow, and orange. I haven't noticed them pecking at them. They don't really pay any attention to them.
