I am interested in why no one has mentioned about the huge loss of chickens due to flys.. I only heard about it off handed and was shocked that it was not posted. I thought that was part of what we are here for. Did I miss it somewhere on here? I contacted USDA and they confirmed that there has been a terrible loss especially Shelby Forest and Millington. Some guy lost 200 another 80. I would like to encourage us to be a little more forth coming with important info like this. I am sorry if any of you guys lost chicks. I found out there is a dust you can get and put on the birds that will protect them. I got it at tractor supply. It has permiethin (sp) in it which is supposedly the only thing that will kill these gnats and flys. If any one is interested just go to tractor supply they have it. I also got some stuff to mix with water that you spray all over and it also helps keep them down.

I was told an old remedy to keep gnats away was apple cider vinegar. So I went around all the pens and hung tuna cans and put the vinegar in them and I have no problems with the gnats anymore or those little black fies. The other flys are still around but as long as I keep things dry and the pen with a concrete floor clean the flys aren't so bad.

Cks4me, the very first time I have ever heard of the fly issue killing off the birds in Shelby Co. was in your post on May 28th. Flies are always an issues in West TN. usually in the summer but of course any feed, manure, water, etc. is a real magnet for any flying critters. Thanks for your update(s). I often spray around my coop and in general yard areas with either Malathion or 10% Permethrin solution. Go to the website below and then you can download or open the files on "Durvet" Brand Permethrin 10% and it will give you usage information and other general information. This can be used safely and non-toxic to humans and stock animals alike, including dogs. For use in livestock areas as well as in kitchens and other human use areas. I think there was some comments last year on the same fly problem, Timbo, but cannot remember the exact posting, time, date, etc. Hope this helps anyone with concerns about the fly issue around us in summer. www.durvet.com/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=92:permethrin-10&Itemid=64Mike
