I am sad, very sad to say that Friday I lost my best momma hen. When I got home she was dead. No blood lost feathers nothing. She was laying in the dusting area. I am fairly positive she had a heart attack or heat stroke. I had water out and there was a place for her to get out of the sun but I think she just got sick fast and could not get out of the sun. I am very sad. She was such a good girl and such a good momma. I will miss her as do her babys.

So sorry to hear that cks4me. The hen I swapped the sizzles and gave her a couple silkie chicks got so mad at me today. And so did the other chickens in that pen. She's a white silkie and she is normally in with the silkies but I put her and the babies in the sizzle pen because it's more secure for chicks and has a fan. Today I had to hose out the pen so I had to catch momma and babies and boy did I make everybody mad. Although I had opened the door so they could all go out, when they heard her yelling at me they all came to her rescue and I had all of them yelling at me. I finaly got the 3 in a carrier and out of the pen so I could hose it out. When I put her and her babies back in the pen she took them straight to the nest box and stayed in there the rest of the day. I guess she showed me. I also know that the rest will defend the babies.

You can let the hen raise them as long as any other birds don't hurt them but she should protect them. I usually take the chicks because I try to sell what I can as soon as i can.
I had felt guilty about taking some chicks away from a hen to take to the last swap and ended up letting her have 2 of them. Well........they got adventurous and one got into the duck pen and got trampled and the other just died the day after. I don't know if it ate something it shoulldn't have or not but both are gone now. Makes me wish I had just taken thenm all to the swap but one never knows what the future brings.

Next time I let a hen hatch out eggs i'll put her in a separate pen while she's still sitting so the chicks are safe.
We're moving soon and i'll have more room for more pens and I'll get the hubby to make a few pens for broody hens. Silkies and Sizzles are always going broody. I had nearly every hen broody not long ago then none now Curly is broody. I've been selling all their eggs so she'll just have to sit on her feet for a while.

Thats Pricilla. I think she's the prettiest one. You can go to my website and see more. chowdownfarm.webs.com Or you can visit and have the nosey Moe follow you around waiting to get petted. I think she tries to surprise me because she will hide then run out then squat at my feet for attention. She has a personality for sure. Attachments:
