So, we have had a coon getting into our corn the last few nights,so I've been staking out the corn field. I sneak out around 9:30 or so and remember that my chicken door is still open. I decide to close it up because I don't know how long I will be out. As I approach the pen,I hear a sound and something climb up the fence. The cats like to get in there,so I was kind of surprized when I shone the light and looked into the face of a coon! Flashlight in one hand and .22 rifle in the other, I shoot several times. The coon falls into the water pan and runs across the pen and climbs up another pole. I emptied what bullets I had left, and must admit I did not feel bad at all as the varmint lay twitching on the ground. I did go in the house to get my husbby and re-load, just in case, but when we got out,it was dead.

Good for you. I had one in my coop last year. My neighbor was outside and he always carries a gun and I called him over to kill it for me. I did feel a little bad because it was such a beautiful animal. Very healthy looking but I guess when it gets fresh eggs everyday it's gonna be. It didn't bother the birds, it just wanted the eggs thank goodness but it still had to go.

Well, I lost my gambel quail roo to a stinkin coon yesterday. It tried to pull it thru the cage bars. The hen has some feathers gone around her neck and she's been freaked out since. So i'm going to put some 1/2 wire on the outside of their cages so the coons can't reach in. Last night the hubby covered up the gambel cage so nothing could get to her and I took the JB's out of their cage and into a transport cage for the night and put them inside the coop. I"m waiting for it to cool off a bit before I go out and make the changes to the cages. I'll have to put a lock on one of the doors too so it can't unlatch the door. I had that happen last year.

I despise coons! I have put screen wire around my pens to keep them from pulling young ones through.

I knew better than not to put the smaller wire over the cage. I should have done it sooner really. I prefer using the 1/2" wire for cages but it's not cheap. I used the last piece of it today on one of the quail cages and just covered the other one. I'll have to pick up another roll of it soon so I can do the other cage. I'll need to make a few more soon. The GG bob whites are starting to pick at each other so it's time to separate them. And I have more JB's that are nearly laying age and i'll have to separate them also into breeding cages. I prefer cages because they're too hard to catch if need be.
The ones meant for freezer camp go in a large cage till they get big enough for camp.
