This is a year old silkie hen and I noticed a few days ago her eye was shut. On further inspection it was crusted closed and swollen. So I cleaned the crust off and got it open and wrinsed it out with warm salt water. I put Duramiacin in her water for infection incase it was lurking somewhere and separated her. I clean and rinse her eye everyday with the salt water and put the duramiacin in her water. She is completely away from other birds and not in the dirt. There is no puss just fluid watery looking and the eye is swollen. When I open her eye I can see a red swollen fleshy something under her eye lids. Her eye looks a bit cloudy but seems to me to be from the irritation of the what ever it's called on a chicken (eye socket?) The picture here is of her eye pried open as you can tell. Is there anything else I can do for her. She laid an egg today. I don't know if thats a sign of her getting better. Sometimes she uses the eye and sometimes she keeps it shut. My eyes are bad and I can't really tell if there is anything in her eye but I have held it open and washed it out. Attachments:

This is her eye shut. See how swollen it is. She doesn't scratch at it. She is eating, drinking and pooping normal. She's not listless. Her eye isn't constantly runny. It's dry till I start cleaning and rinsing it out. I left her alone one day just to see how it did and no improvement. She seems to do better when I rinse it out but she sure don't like it. She will let me rub below and above her eye but protests when I clean where the eye lids go together. I hope all the explanation helps and hopefully i'm doing the right thing. A vet is out of the question. This move has us broke. Attachments:

Her eye may have got scratched. i would keep her on antibotics and rinse. Is the saltwater irratating the eye and socket?

Chow,
You might get some human eye wash and use that on her. Like Tim, another bird might have gotten her in a squabble or she might have run into something or maybe a bee sting in the eye.
Hope it improves and she goes on to good health.

The roo in the b/b/s pen is a little rough. I'll try the eye drops. Thanks for the help.

I looked at TSC and they have it but it's $22 and i can't swing it right now. She's not any worse but not better either. I was extremely busy today with home health care arrangements for my mother n law and putting up shades and curtains I lost track of time. It's 8:30 pm and i'm just getting to supper. I'll be so glad when this move is over.
