Put some golf balls in your nest box. You can still collect eggs that way, but if one wants to go broody there will be golf balls in there for her to sit while you collect good eggs for her. We just had one go broody and she would go into the nest box every morning and sit on her two golf balls. We would get her at night and put her up, then she would go right back as soon as we let her out. She is now sitting 3 banty eggs and happy as can be-for a broody

My black hen is still sitting on an empty nest. I have some eggs up for sale. If they don't sell, i'll just give them to her. I hate to see a hen tied to a nest in this heat but she's gonna sit there anywy. I take her down off the nesting shelf and she runs to eat and drink then back up the ladder to her empty nest. I have 2 more that are determined to sit also.
It would be nice if they stopped laying for a while anyway.

If your asking me, they're mostly sizzle and some silkie. Most of my silkies and 1 sizzle are broody. I have a dozen eggs on an auction thread right now. It ends tomorrow at 4 pm. I sold 2 of the white hens this weekend and one of them was laying so less eggs. One of the blue ones lays hers all over the place. I think she's boycotted nest boxes. She's laid them in my potted plants, on the patio, under tomato plants. It's like hungint easter eggs. lol My silkies that have been laying are a blue hen over a blue roo and white over white and lav splash. But one of the lav splash and a white has gone broody. These eggs I collected since thursday when they all where laying. Well, less the 7 broodys. Attachments:

If you need broody's, Silkies are the ones to have. My oldest partridge hen is broody more than she lays. I had taken her last couple of eggs that didn't hatch and had her chicks in a brooder. So she would sit a while then up and around with the other 2 hens for a while. I had gotten some quail eggs in the mail and I put them in her nest and she chittered and hopped right on them. She's as happy as a pig in poop when she's got eggs to sit on. One of her daughters started laying last month. Laid an egg a day for 2 weeks then went broody. So now they share the job of hatching the guinea eggs. While the other daughter is content to crowd in the nest long enough to lay an egg and hop back out.
One of my sizzles is the same way. She would rather sit on eggs. A black silkie hen is sitting on nothing right now. Oh, I had better stop. I have 3 more broodys. lol
You don't have to worry about the other silkies in the pen when the chicks hatch either. I have put different breed chicks in with the adults for lack of space and they do just fine. Nobody has ever gotten hurt. They pretty much ignore them.

The saddles will stay on as long as the straps are adjusted tight enough they don't slip off. Some hens are Houdini's and get out over and over but with adjustments they will eventually leave them alone. You don't want the straps too tight that cause irritation but tight enough they can't get them off. The snaps are cruical too. Some hens can unsnap them. For those hens I use the large snaps that fit tighter, not the smaller ones. One person thought to put the small snaps on to prevent her hen from unsnapping it and she chewed it off and swallowed it. The biggest ones are very hard to unsnap. I have yet to have a houdini unsnap one. I normally don't use those, just for the tricky hens.
I replied to another post about your rooster needing rehap about the aprons.

Hi there! A friend of mine has a very broody hen. We were thinking about giving her some eggs to sit on but, were a little worried she might get too hot in the hen house. My friend has to push her off of a nest and make her go out to the shade where it is cooler. They even shut the hen house door behind her because she will only go back in and sit on an empty nest. There are two hens in the pen and no roos. We would like to give her what she wants and buy some eggs to put under her and make her happy. Any thoughts. Is this wise to do in this type of heat we have right now?

i have a hen that has been in the coop for 4 days now she is doing good . i would think as hot as she would keep the eggs that it wouldn't hurt her . i imagine that it is hot any time a hen set on eggs. as long as it not unreal hot in the coop I'm jest learning about chickens and hatching eggs . need to get more feedback form other members that know allot more than i do about this

How hot does it get in there? I have 5 hens sitting on eggs right now. They're doing fine. I go in and take them off the nest and set them by the water. They quickly drink, eat and poop and climb back up. As warm as it is it won't hurt for them to be off the eggs a little bit.
I'll be bringing silkie and sizzle eggs for anybody that may be interested to the swap. That is if they keep laying.

Moving hens is pure luck. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I managed to move 2 hens, but I have 3 more that would not cover the eggs after I moved them. I finally left them out and they are in the nest boxes with no eggs. I have not had time to try again.
