I have one speckled sussex who is determined to be a mom but I am sure if I move her out of where she is she will stop and then I will have a bunch of eggs, which btw I would love to hatch, die. question: if she stays in the main house would the others kill the babys or is it a crap shoot?

I moved some chickens around yesterday. I put a white silkie hen that's broody in a separate pen and gave her some eggs that are due to hatch in a few days that where in the incubator. I moved the other white hen to the other pen and gave her the eggs that where left from the egg theif that both the white hens where sitting on. She decided after the move she wasn't broody anymore. Hopefully the eggs aren't ruined because I put them in the incubator. I plan to candle tonight sometime before I go to bed.
I moved a sizzle that has been on pheasant eggs to the grow pen because she had 2 chicks hatch early and left 7 eggs that where due today but no chicks. I took the guinea eggs from the partridge silkie hens and put them in the incubator to hatch. I should have candled them because they felt light. I'll candle them all tonight to see what's going on inside.
My egg theif got greedy this morning and took all 4 eggs from my black silkie hen. We never had so many gone all at once. So the hubby and I went around the cop and buttoned it all up. and set traps inside and outside of it. Hopefully what ever it is either can't get in and if it's snakes hopefully we'll catch them in the traps.
At this rate I won't have many chicks to bring to the swap this saturday.

We have bot but we live on a busy road and other than chaining the dog by the coop we can't just leave her loose. She was my daughters dog and she didn't teach her to stay out of the road. Quite the opposite. She ran around where ever she wanted to. She's not a fighter unless somebody or something messes with her kids (my grandsons). Otherwise she's a big old coward. She'll roll on her back just to put her on a chain and take her back off.
The cat hunts the mice but she don't care for the snakes. This morning, again, something large tried to break into one of the smaller pens. It's a old rabbit hutch renovated to hole chickens. There are GG bob whites in one side and bantam teenagers in the other side.

My black sizzle went broody about a week and a half ago and everytime I collected eggs I got bitten. She didn't just peck at me she actually bit me. So I gave her some eggs I had gotten from a swap on BYC and I went to check to see if anybody else laid any eggs in her nest and boy or boy did she get mad at me. I'm sure they have a better chance under a hen than in the bator. I got some buff silkie eggs that I really want to hatch. I don't have any buffs.......yet.

It depends on the hens size. She can sit on how ever many she can cover. I have 1 white silkies that are broody and between the two of them they can cover a dozen easy. The new silkies I got are heaftier and i'm sure when they do go broody they could cover more eggs. Elvis my black sizzle hen is sitting on 6 Maran eggs and they're big eggs too and Pricilla the paint sizzle hen is on 2 Ameracauna eggs. I could fit probably 2 more under her because she's little and a bit bare from breeding. The sizzles seem to get bare easier than the regular silkies and i'm sure it's because of the feather type they are.
